DESCRIPTION
Cantamus
, or otherwise known as the Cantamus Girls Choir, was formed in 1968 by choir director Pamela Cook, who remains their leader to this day. Cantamus always consists of 45 girls aged between thirteen and nineteen. They also have a junior choir that trains singers up for the real choir. Cantamus have won the UK many awards, including winning gold medals at the Choir Olympics and taking the Choir of the World title. Although Cantamus have recorded much of their repertoire throughout the years, they have only released two commercial studio albums. Their first, Aurora, was in 2001, and saw the girls collaborate with British film and television composer Sarah Class (one of the talents behind Hayley Westenra's Pure album). Aurora was nominated for the album of the year at the Classical Brits. Typically, Cantamus are just like any other choir, but their album with Sarah Class sets them apart; it has a new age, chill-out feel to it, whilst their second album sees popular songs (such as Coldplay's 'Fix You' and East 17's 'Stay Another Day') given a choral arrangement. If you like Libera and Scala & the Kolacny Brothers, you are likely to be taken by Cantamus.

Sad to see that Pamela Cook died on 11th July. I saw her directing the choir twice, and actually met her at Amore's concert at the Barbican in February.
