ARTIST OVERALL RATINGS
DESCRIPTION
Emma Shapplin is probably the most elusive classical crossover artist you’ll come across. She spent over seven years in silence since her second album Etterna in 2002, and only broke it to release a third album, Macadam Flower, in late 2009. Despite her lack of media and fan relations, she is very well known in the crossover circuit and is immensely popular, especially with Sarah Brightman fans. Her infrequent activity is a shame, since Shapplin is among the most creative of her contemporaries. Her first two albums are original compositions, the second album being her own. They are full light modern operas; slightly gothic in theme, including beats and the lyrics are sung in Old Italian. Unfortunately, her third album took a different direction from crossover and stands firmly in the pop arena. Fans of the female fronted symphonic metal scene, that is to say, bands such as Nightwish, Within Temptation and Epica, will love Shapplin's vision and the atmospheric sound of her first two albums.
