Susan Boyle was not the only memorable contestant on the 2009 series of Britain's Got Talent. Fourteen year old Hollie Steel created her own headlines when she broke down on live TV during the semi-finals, calling into question whether children should be allowed to participate in televised talent contests. Regardless, she went through to the finals and proved she could handle the pressure as well as any adult on the show. After BGT her family set up their own label to launch Steel's recording career, and her debut album, Hollie, was released in May, 2010 in conjunction with Universal. Her album, recorded when she had just turned eleven, has a mixture of arias, classical favourites and popular numbers from musicals. She has released a second disc: a limited edition Christmas album to be distributed only through her official website, alongside a commercially available single, 'When Christmas Comes to Town' in late 2010. If you like child singers, but find the likes of Jackie Evancho too precocious, Steel is a delightful choice. She has a high, clear and light voice, though like any young voice, it can be wobbly. Fortunately she makes no attempt to seem older than she is, giving her that extra charm. Her recorded version of Faith Hill's 'Where Are You Christmas?' in particular is an immense treat.
